The north part of the island belongs to Turks and many names of cities and villages have been changed to Turkish. However the relations between the inhabitants and their northern neighbours are still under trial every day.
The Republic in its own turn is also trying to create an autonomous identity, and many places in the Republic have recently changed their names as well.
Despite all these there are many things left connecting modern Cyprus to its glorious past such as Greek religious temples, Roman mosaics and 15th-century wall-paintings, bringing all eras together. Almost all of these relics have an impact on artists nowadays and that is obvious in many villages that are specializing in a particular art form. You can also find great pieces of work in pottery, silver and copperware, basket weaving, tapestry and Lefkara's famous lacework, all being manufactured on the spot.
